Exclusive "Imperator" Music Automaton – A Museum-Worthy Masterpiece from the Gründerzeit Period (circa 1890)
Now offered for sale: an absolute rarity from the late 19th century—a monumental, original upright music automaton featuring the renowned "Imperator" system. This museum-worthy piece combines the sublime craftsmanship of the Gründerzeit era with the ultra-precise mechanics characteristic of the world-famous Leipzig musical instrument industry of that time.
The imposing cabinet is crafted from exquisite walnut wood. The fine veneer features a beautiful, mirror-image flame pattern (an inlaid diamond/grain pattern) on the large paneled door of the lower cabinet section. The surface has been professionally cleaned and traditionally waxed, allowing the warm, deep color and the silky-smooth matte patina of the walnut wood to be displayed to perfection.
Architecture and Decoration
The cabinet’s design is architecturally clean yet simultaneously opulent, executed in the classic style of the Gründerzeit (the era of industrial flourishing in the late 19th century):
Magnificent Crown (Corona): The upper section is crowned by a richly carved pediment featuring a central shell motif, flanked by turned decorative finials.
Classic Column Architecture: The upper glazed section is framed by striking, fully sculpted, fluted three-quarter columns that terminate in graceful capitals.
Original Glasswork: The large, curved front door features an artistic, original Art Nouveau/Historicist etching, along with the beautiful inscription "Musik-Automat Imperator" (Imperator Music Automaton) rendered in gold relief. Technical Features and Internal Mechanism
Behind the glass front lies the fascinating, fully functional mechanical heart of the instrument:
Sound System: This is an instrument of exceptionally high quality, featuring a dual-comb mechanism that produces a full, rich, and orchestral sound.
Glockenspiel: The central disc mechanism is flanked by a total of 12 tuned metal bells (6 on the left and 6 on the right), which are mechanically struck by separate small hammers, providing a charming, delicate accompaniment to the music.
Clockwork & Coin Mechanism: The automaton is equipped with a classic, historic coin-insertion mechanism (token mechanism) and an original, side-mounted crank for winding the powerful spring motor.
Discs: The instrument plays vertical, perforated metal discs. One original perforated metal disc (titled "Maikäferlied – May-bug's-song" by Rud. Dellinger, No. 742) is included.
Condition
The music box is in excellent, age-appropriate, and restored condition. The cabinet is sturdy and waxed, ready for display. The mechanism starts smoothly, and both the coin mechanism and the bells function with precision. A fascinating piece of German industrial history and a striking showpiece for any stately room, salon, or refined antique collection.
